  • Master on vessels up to 80 metres long in inshore waters.

Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal)

National ID: MAR40220 | State ID: BFV6

This qualification is aligned to the educational requirement for Certification as Marine Engine Driver (Motor) Grade 1 as described in Part D of the National Standards for Commercial Vessels (NSCV). The Marine Engine Driver (Motor) Grade 1 Certificate of Competency (CoC) is issued by the appropriate maritime regulatory authority in each state and territory.

A Marine Engine Driver (Motor) Grade 1 Certificate allows a holder to take charge of the machinery on vessels less than:

  • 525kw (35QN) propulsion power engaged in operations in any area; or750kw (50QN) propulsion power engaged in operations up to Australian Coastal - Middle Water Limits (600nm), or
  • 1500kw propulsion power engaged in operations up to Inshore limits (15nm).

This certificate also allows the holder to be second-in-charge of machinery on vessels less than:

  • 525kw (35QN) propulsion power engaged in Australian Coastal - Middle Water Limits (600nm)
  • 750kw (50QN) propulsion power engaged in operations up to Australian Coastal - Middle Water Limits (600nm)
  • 1500kw propulsion power engaged in operations up to Offshore Limits (600nm); or
  • 1500kw propulsion power

Evidence of sea time/service on board a vessel will be required to obtain a Marine Engine Driver (Motor) Grade 1 Certificate of Competency from AMSA. For information on all CoC requirements, please see: http://nationalsystem.amsa.gov.au/factsheets.php

Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating)

National ID: MAR30220 | State ID: BFW1

The Integrated Rating (IR) course is an entry-level qualification to equip new entrants into the maritime industry with practical skills and knowledge in general shipboard operations of merchant ships. This course is the AMSA approved pre-sea training course required (along with the AMSA required sea service) for issuance of the AMSA Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency. Integrated ratings steer a vessel under the direction of the officer of the watch and work in the engine room under the direction of engineering officers.

  • conduct engine and navigational watches
  • assist in berthing and unberthing
  • provide general deck operational assistance and maintain documentation
  • general servicing and maintenance of the ship and its machinery
  • maintain cleanliness of decks and structures

In addition to successful completion of the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete each of the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

  • Hold an approved steering Certificate
