This qualification provides the main entry point for individuals working in the fishing sector of the seafood industry.

Students enrolling in Cert II fishing operations need to be aware that AMSA require completion of the shipboard safety skill set to work on a domestic commercial vessel.

The aim of this course is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to gain employment as a deckhand in the fishing industry. It is the pathway to a career in the commercial fishing industry, tourist/charter boats, workboats, ferries and dive boats.

You will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • Assisting with operation of fishing gear and equipment
  • Basic processing and temperature control of harvest
  • General cleaning and maintenance of equipment and vessel, and
  • Handling, harvesting and sorting by-catch.

Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to become a deckhand/general purpose hand on a commercial fishing, fishing charter, ferry or dive charter vessels. You may also have the opportunity to gain 9 months logged seatime towards a Master Class V/Skipper III Certificate of Competence.
